Probiotics! You’ve heard of them right? They’ve become one of the most popular type of health supplements out there. In fact the use of probiotics quadrupled between 2007 and 2012!
If you want to include probiotics in your health regimen, here is one super easy (and delicious) way to do it. Drink water kefir!
Before I tell you my story let’s find out what probiotics are and what they can do for your health.
What are probiotics?
Millions of microorganisms live on and in our bodies. Some are helpful and some are harmful.
According to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics, probiotics are “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”.
Put simply, you can take probiotics by taking supplements or eating foods that contain the strains of beneficial bacteria usually found in our bodies. The premise is that doing this will increase the number of good bacteria, and thus improve our overall health.
There are many types of probiotic supplements out there, but I try to get mine from food. According to this article from healthline.com, examples of foods that contain probiotics are yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and pickles (made without vinegar).
How I used water kefir for probiotics
A friend of mine gave me some water kefir grains a couple of months ago. I had never heard of it before, but it turned out to be a life saver!
I am grateful to have had it exactly when I needed it. In June I took a round of antibiotics for Lyme disease. The antibiotics were prescribed to rid my body of the harmful bacteria introduced by the tick. The downside is that antibiotics kill all bacteria, both harmful and beneficial strains.
Drinking water kefir was a great tasting way to restore more beneficial bacteria to my system. Since I have dairy allergies, it can be difficult to find delicious dairy-free probiotic foods.
Water kefir has turned out to be the probiotic solution for me!
Here’s how to make water kefir
Water kefir is surprisingly easy to care for and use.
- 4 cups clean water
- 1/4 cup cane sugar
- 1/4 cup water kefir grains
- Drop of blackstrap molasses
- Using a glass container and a wooden spoon, dissolve the sugar and molasses in the water. Be careful not to leave any sugar granules as these will damage the kefir grains.
- Using a mesh sieve (not metal) drain your existing jar of water kefir into a glass container. This is what you will drink.
- Rinse the grains in the sieve with your fresh sugar water.
- Add clean grains to the fresh sugar water and cover with a non-metal cover. I use a coffee filter secured with a rubber band.
- Let stand for 2 to 3 days.
How to create drinks with your water kefir
The easiest way to drink water kefir is to add a splash of your favorite fruit juice, and enjoy. Honestly the possibilities are endless. You can add it to virtually any beverage.
Try putting it into a smoothie, using it in dressings and sauces, or freezing it into cubes or pops.
While researching nutritional support for Lyme disease I came across this recipe for Cranberry Lemonade at Organic Lifestyle magazine. Instead of sweetening with stevia, I used my water kefir to sweeten.
